PROSTATE SPECIFIC ANTIGEN (PSA)

Prostate-specific antigen (PSA) is a protein produced by the epithelial cells of the prostate gland. Its function is to dilute the ejaculate, allowing better sperm motility.

PSA also plays a role in dissolving cervical mucus, facilitating the entry of sperm into the uterus.

Normally, PSA is present in small amounts in the blood of men with a healthy prostate. Prostate diseases (such as prostatitis, benign prostatic hyperplasia and cancer) lead to an increase in PSA levels in the blood. PSA levels also increase naturally with age, after prostate surgery or after specific diagnostic tests (such as rectal examination, prostate biopsy and prostate ultrasound).
