Streptocci, what exactly are they?
Streptococci are a group of bacteria that can cause many different types of infections, ranging from relatively mild conditions such as sore throat, impetigo and scarlet fever to more serious conditions such as pneumonia and rheumatic fever. However, when the bacteria enter the bloodstream or underlying tissue, an invasive infection occurs, which can cause life-threatening complaints such as blood poisoning (sepsis). The bacterium is therefore also called the flesh-eating bacterium.
Every reason to quickly know whether it concerns a streptococcal infection in case of complaints, you can do this with a self-test for group A streptococci, also called the Strep-A test.
Symptoms that may indicate a group A streptococcus infection:
cold , sore throat , swollen tonsils , swollen glands , bumpy tongue , red rash , fever
Why rush if you suspect a strep A infection?
- Quick diagnosis: A self-test can quickly reveal whether a throat infection is caused by streptococci. This is important because streptococcal infections usually respond well to antibiotics, which is not the case with viral infections.
- Treatment and prevention of complications: Early diagnosis and treatment can shorten the duration of the disease and reduce the risk of complications.
- Limiting the spread: Streptococci are contagious. By quickly knowing whether you have a streptococcal infection, you can take measures to limit the spread to others.
- Reassurance: For people with symptoms consistent with a streptococcal infection, such as sore throat, fever, and swollen lymph nodes, a self-test can provide reassurance and help determine next steps for care and treatment.
The Strep-A self-test from Alcoline is from the Swiss manufacturer Prima-Lab and specially developed for administration at home. The sample collection is done with a throat swab and provides a result after 5 minutes. The Strep-A test has an overall reliability of 97,90%.
It is important to carefully follow the instructions for an accurate result. In the event of a positive result, it is recommended to contact a medical doctor for appropriate treatment. In the event of a negative result, but persistent symptoms, it is also advisable to seek medical advice, as there may be other causes for the symptoms. Questions? Please contact us.
